Transcript:

I just got a call a half an hour ago from a guy who said, “I have an overwhelming urge to use porn right now.” I said, “Tell me why?”

“Well, you know sex…”

“No, it’s not about sex. How do YOU feel?”

“Well? I feel stressed that…”

Ah. Stress is why people use porn. “Stressed about what?” and he named me three or four things that he was stressed about. And all I did was use the things that we just talked about, remembering that he's loved, remembering that he's not alone, and in one case not worrying about something he has absolutely no control over. I wasn't trying to make him feel better. I was dealing with the reality of what makes sense to be afraid of and what doesn't make sense to be afraid of, and what he can do about those fears.

And by the end of the conversation I said, “I'm not looking for an answer. How do you feel?”

He said, “Well, I feel really peaceful.”

“Do you feel like using porn?”

“No, I don't.”

And I didn't address his porn use at all. It's stress. It's getting rid of fear.
