What is Real Love? – Top Ten #1
Greg answers the question, "What is Real Love?" and explains the truth about finding unconditional love & fulfilling relationships.
What Human Beings Want Most
If you want to know what we human beings want most, it’s not tough to figure out. Just look at what we talk about most, what we read most, what we watch most. So, if we look at all the books ever written, all the movies produced, all the magazines printed, all the conversations held, what topic would we find running through them more than any other? Intuitively, you already know. It's love—that feeling of being connected to and cared for by other people.
There is nothing quite like being told, “I love you.” But not just any kind of love will do. Not just any kind of love will make us happy. Let me illustrate. What if somebody says to you, “I love you.” But then a few minutes later comes into the room and says, “Are you the one who did this?” in a harsh tone of voice? How loved do you feel now? It's gone, isn't it? That's because the kind of feeling that person expressed to you is not love. That's not the kind of love that fills us up and creates happiness in our lives.
What is Real Love — A Definition
The only kind of love that does that is what I call Real Love. Real Love is caring about the happiness of another person without wanting anything in return. It's Real Love when I care about your happiness without wanting anything from you. It's Real Love when you care about my happiness without wanting anything from me in return.
It's not Real Love when I do what you want, and you like me—that's worthless. It's Real Love when I'm stupid and inconvenient and don't do what you want, and you don't feel disappointed or irritated at me. That's Real Love. And when we have enough of that, the world literally becomes a different place. With enough Real Love, we feel happy and emotionally and spiritually healthy and complete. The little inconveniences around us which happen every day, become almost meaningless. Life is a joy.
