A Glitch in the Software

I once ordered a new version of a word processing program. After downloading it, I kept experiencing inexplicable malfunctions: words disappeared, fonts changed, and sometimes the entire program froze.

This was not compatible with the work I was attempting to do, so I called the customer service number that accompanied the program. The representative said, “We’ve seen this before,” an honest expression that surprised and pleased me. He explained that they had made some corrections, and he downloaded a “patch”—some software corrections—to my computer.

Within moments of rebooting the computer, my previous problems were solved. The keystrokes that previously had caused serious mistakes now produced exactly the results I desired. My computer had been fine all along, but with a “glitch”—a malfunction—in the software, my computer behaved as though there were something severely wrong with it. It became nearly useless.

I have a firm belief that we as human being are not defective. Our computers, in short, are not broken. But nearly all of us were given software in the beginning that was defective. Because of these errant pathways, we cannot respond in loving and happy ways to the situations and people around us. Once the software is corrected—as we are taught to feel loved and be loving—we can finally see the world around us clearly, and we can respond productively to the people and circumstances around us.
