This Step and the Next

I can’t count how many people have described to me their fears of the future, which paralyze them and prevent them from taking the next step forward in their growth. I encourage them to stay in their enjoyment of the moment—in gratitude for what they already have—rather than worrying about what could happen. This might appear to set up a conflict between living in the moment and planning for the future.

There is no conflict.

Enjoy the present moment. Enjoy the love you feel and the life you have. And while you do that, you can also make whatever preparations for the future are necessary.

I knew, for example, that I wanted to become a surgeon. In order to realize that dream, I had to take the right classes to be admitted to medical school, then do well in my medical classes, and then apply to the right surgery residency programs. But I planned for the future WHILE I was enjoying the present: raising a family, developing a relationship with God, and feeling the fulfilment of studying and learning medicine—along with many other subjects—along the way.

We can enjoy the present and plan for—but not worry about—the future at the same time.
