Real Love Poem

By Greg Baer M.D.

November 24, 2014

You see a miracle
Hidden beneath skin and bone
Huddled under niceties and nuance
Swathed in blankets
of guilt shame and frustration
Suffocating under the weight
of expectation and obligation
Approval-seeking
from unsound sources
Trading for a brief pleasure gain
Smiling through the pain
Engaging with empty life forces
Running on 2 legs
as far as the eye can see
But not far enough away
to be lost forever
to those with time to believe
Peeking through a gap in the mask
Two shining pupils look out
"I’m in here" says the miracle
Louder than a whisper
Softer than a shout
Lighter than air
The secret's been let out
