One day I was talking to an electrical engineer, and he was disputing the existence of unconditional love. “Impossible,” he said. “Nobody can love unconditionally.”
“Have you ever FELT loved unconditionally?” I asked.
“No, of course not! That’s my point. If it existed, wouldn’t I have seen it, or wouldn’t somebody have described it to me?”
“There is no calculus,” I said, well aware that in his profession he uses this higher form of mathematics every day.
“What?! Of course there is. I use it all the time.”
“Prove it. Assume that I just walked out of the jungle and that I have no familiarity whatever with any mathematical principles, including addition or subtraction. Now, in the next couple of minutes, prove to me that calculus exists.”
His eyes wandered up as he thought about this conundrum. “I can’t, but it still exists.”
“You can’t prove it to me only because I don’t have any experiences that would enable me to understand it. And so it is with Real Love. You’ve never felt it. You’ve never seen other people experience it—as far as you know. So you have concluded that it doesn’t exist, but the truth is that your experience is simply limited. I know it exists because I have felt it, seen it, and shared it on thousands of occasions. I have no doubt whatever of my experience, anymore than I doubt that we are speaking now. IF you wished to learn of the existence of Real Love, I could easily prove it to you, but it would require willingness and time from you.”
Most people have never experienced Real Love, so it’s understandable that they’re skeptical of its existence. And rarely are they willing to do what is required to find it as long as they’re satisfied with the Imitation Love they’re earning. But Real Love does exist, and—when we sufficiently desire something more from our lives—it can be found.
