From One Spark to Billions: The Ripple Effect of Small Kindnesses

At times we are tempted to feel small. ā€œI am just one person,ā€ we say. ā€œWhat can I really do to make a difference?ā€

That question may seem daunting, but consider what happened the other day when I made a single loving comment to another person on the phone. Hours later, he wrote to say that I had changed his entire day, which to that point had not looked promising at all.

Now letā€™s be conservative and say that each of us were to positively influence just one person per month for the next ten years, and that each of those people were to do the same, and each of the third tier were to do the same, and so on.

If this were to continue uninterruptedā€”each positively influenced person passing on that effect to just one previously unaffected person per monthā€”at the end of ten years weā€™d see a positive influence in 73.7 BILLION people, which is roughly ten times the population of the world.

Choose now to be that first person. Love someone. Make a difference in their life. You might even go crazy and be loving to two people in a month. As you do, itā€™s quite likely that they will pass that influence on to some extent. And this is how we change the world.
