Clara’s life had been a nightmare: miserable childhood, horrible relationships, and more. After spending a couple of days with me, her face transformed. Toward the end of our time together, she was struggling to describe how she felt and said, “I, I . . .”

Anticipating how she might want to finish that sentence, I offered, “You’re HOME.”

A look of recognition and then astonishment crossed her face, and she wept. “Home,” she finally said. “Yes, I’m home.”

Home is not a matter of blood or adoption or geography. It’s not a building. Home is where we feel loved. It’s really that simple. As children, we all expected—unconsciously, of course—to be born into a home. Often we were told we were home. But very few of us experienced unconditional love in the place called “home.” So we felt lost and even betrayed. We suffered Post-Childhood Stress Disorder because of the trauma we suffered in the place called “home.”

But regardless of how we were raised, or how much pain we’ve experienced, we can find the Real Love we need. We can find home, and we can carry it with us—wherever we go. All our lives we’ve run FROM pain, but with a genuine home, we finally have a place to run TO. Finally, we can always go home. We can LIVE home. We can BE home. And that is real living.
